Urban Talks: The Role of Metropolises in Leading a Just Transition

01:00 PM GMT + 3

Event will be in Turkish. A recording with English subtitles will be available afterwards.

The Urban Talks session, organized in collaboration with the Marmara Municipalities Union Sustainability and Climate Change Center, Urban Policy Center and Boğaziçi University, will focus on the role of Istanbul’s energy and water footprints in a just transition, in line with the World Metropolitan Day 2024 theme, “Leading the Just Transition.”

Environmental injustice refers to the social, economic and ecological imbalances that cities create when they use resources such as energy and water from other regions. Understanding this concept is critical for planning a fair and inclusive transformation process.

Dr. Cem İskender Aydın from Boğaziçi University will discuss Istanbul’s energy consumption and its impacts on other cities, while Dr. İrem Daloğlu Çetinkaya will address where the city’s water resources come from and the injustices they create. The session will explore how metropolises can reduce their ecological footprints and the role of local governments in driving this process.

Urban Talks will provide a comprehensive platform for discussing how metropolitan cities can lead a just transition and develop sustainable policies.
